Particular Cases
Architecture is framed through its relatives and its others, through relation (to histories and material cultures, environments, technologies, codes, conventions, politics, economies, and desires) that, following postcolonial writer Eduard Glissant, “is only universal through the absolute and specific quantity of its particularities.” If we consider these particularities as fundamental, architectural projects turn into singular research situations within specific contexts and under specific conditions. These contexts are not given in advance, but are formed in relation to the project and the artistic-scientific methods that are or have been developed therefore. In other words, we understand particular cases as projective research that not only reflects situations by acting in space, it also serves to reflect on a work, a line of work, methodologies as well as technologies. Thus, reflection is an inherent and constituting part of particular cases. To share their reflections we invite artist Iman Issa, architecture historian Cornelia Escher, architects Lars Fischer and Hilary Sample.

The 9th CA²RE conference together with the 4th CA²RE+ event series is promoted by the Department of Architecture of the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU). Building on the themes of the previous events – OBSERVATION, SHARING and COMPARISON – the HAMBURG event will focus on REFLECTION.

The CA²RE+ Strategic Partnership builds on the experience of the CA²RE community and its biannual Conferences on Artistic and Architectural Research since Autumn 2016, organised in association with the Architectural Research European Network Association (ARENA), EAAE and ELIA. It comprises 9 European Universities and is running for 3 years (2019-2022). Its backbone is a series of biannual international and intercultural INTENSIVE STUDY PROGRAMMES for doctoral candidates, guided by experienced evaluators from participating universities and invited experts.

Due to the current pandemic situation, this event will be an online-conference. (We had originally hoped to make a hybrid event possible, but unfortunately, still in early 2021 the situation does not allow face2face events in Hamburg.)

This website will be successively updated. More information on the context at:
